Award-Winning Research at the ERATOSTHENES CoE

On 11th May, we had the distinct pleasure of hosting Dr. Mikhail Paramonov (Project Manager, ACTRIS-ERIC) at our facilities. During his visit here, he also awarded, on behalf of ACTRIS Science Committee, PhD student Maria Poutli with her Student Poster Award, earned at the ACTRIS Science Conference in Oslo!

In a truly remarkable achievement, Maria’s work was selected among 250 poster presentations, showcasing the world-class quality of research emerging from the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence.

Maria’s award-winning poster, titled:

“EarthCARE satellite mission: Validation of L2a aerosol products using CARO ground-based measurements in the Eastern Mediterranean”

Why this research matters

In the framework of the crucial Cal/Val (Calibration/Validation) activities led by our Atmospheric Cluster, Maria’s work focused on critical comparison between smoke cases detected by the EarthCARE satellite and our very own CARO National Facility ground-based lidar.

Key Highlights of her Study:

  • A comprehensive one-year statistical analysis of night-time measurements.
  • Directly highlighting the advanced capabilities of ATLID EBD products.
  • Proving the power of ground-based observations in validating next-generation satellite data.

The Power of Collaboration

This research was supported in part by the ATARRI project, showcasing how collaborative efforts drive innovation and advance our understanding of environmental and atmospheric dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean.
