Members of the Atmospheric Cluster of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence participated in the MedCLIVAR2026 conference, The Mediterranean Climate: Variability, Change, and Regional Futures, held on 21 – 25 September 2026 in Limassol, Cyprus. The conference was organised by the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE-C) of The Cyprus Institute, under the auspices of the Municipality of Limassol, and brought together the scientific community to advance a multidisciplinary understanding of Mediterranean climate evolution, addressing atmospheric, marine, and terrestrial processes across timescales ranging from past climate reconstructions to future projections.
The ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence was represented by Dr. Rodanthi-Elisavet Mamouri, who chaired the session “Atmospheric composition, aerosols, air quality and climate interactions” on 24 September; Dr. George Kotsias, who presented “Synergistic Lidar-Radar Analysis of Mineral Dust Impact on Ice Formation over the Eastern Mediterranean using Cloudnet Observations”; and PhD student Konstantinos Chrysostomou, who presented the poster “A Decade of Change in Eastern Mediterranean Boundary-Layer Winds Revealed by Doppler Lidar Observations”.
The presented research made use of long-term observations from the Cyprus Atmospheric Research Observatory (CARO) operated by the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence, highlighting the value of the facility’s continuous atmospheric observations for investigating aerosol-cloud interactions, mineral dust effects, boundary-layer dynamics, and climate variability in the Eastern Mediterranean. Participation in the conference therefore provided an opportunity to disseminate results derived from CARO observations, engage with the wider Mediterranean climate research community, and strengthen scientific exchange and collaboration in the region.
