Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence in Thessaloniki for EarthCARE Campaign 2025!

We’re excited to share that the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence (ECoE) will be actively participating in the EarthCARE validation campaign in Thessaloniki, Greece, from April 22 to May 22, 2025!

Our team will join leading European research groups in an effort to validate satellite observations and study the atmosphere across different environments – urban, semi-urban, and rural – perfectly aligned with EarthCARE satellite overpasses.

Representing ECoE on-site:
Georgia Charalambous – Resilient Society Dept. | Solar Cluster
Maria Poutli & Athina Savva – Environment & Climate Dept. | Atmospheric Cluster

Instruments Deployed by Eratosthenes CoE:
A Solar Camera for sky/cloud tracking
A Pyranometer to measure solar radiation
A Microtops Photometer for aerosol optical properties

Campaign Goals Include:
• Direct validation of EarthCARE aerosol & cloud products
• Study of solar radiation variability under aerosol-cloud conditions
• Validation of low-cost sensors and exploration of 3D cloud structures (in collaboration with the CERTAINTY project)

In collaboration with:
PMOD/WRC (Switzerland), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) @LAP-AUTH, University of Zurich (Switzerland), @National Observatory of Athens – ReACT group (Greece) NOA – ReACT National Observatory of Athens, University of Patras – LAP (Greece) @LAP-Upatras, ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence (Cyprus)
Supported by Race ECV (SBFI Switzerland) & Harmonia-COST Action

Stay tuned as we share field insights and contribute to cutting-edge atmospheric research!
