The Project
The Project
The overreaching objective of the ATARRI Twinning activity is to exploit the full potential of the ERATOSTHENES CoE CARO National Facility and Solar Network towards scientific excellence and application development in the atmospheric research enchasing the Earth Observation R&I and modeling capacities of ERATOSTHENES Center of Excellence

Objectives
Objectives
STO.01
Strengthen the expertise and improve the research profile of ECoE, through strategic collaborations with highly capable and renowned partners in the field of atmospheric modelling and satellite calibration/ validation (cal/val) through modelling and remote sensing synergies.
- Focus on strategic networking towards: i) increasing dust modelling knowledge and capabilities (BSC/CNS) ii) develop synergistic products for enhanced atmospheric characterization (e.g. aerosols and clouds) (GRASP SAS), iii) enhancing ground-based aerosol remote sensing and solar measurement capabilities and satellite validation activities (PMODWRC), and iv) being capable of valorising the acquired knowledge, competences, and data in urban photovoltaic (PV) solar energy applications (ARMINES/ ENSMP).
- Transfer of specialized knowledge on tools, techniques, algorithms and data analysis methods regarding satellite remote sensing of aerosol (especially dust) sources, clouds and precipitation over the Eastern Mediterranean up to the Middle East.
STO.02
Enhance research management capacity and administrative skills of the ECoE infrastructure and applications towards widening access, increased mobility and collaboration.
- Enhance project management expertise of ECoE through collaboration with the experienced partners, leading multi-institute EU projects.
- Improve ECoE contribution to environmental, atmospheric, and climate research, by optimizing the ability to exploit multi-platform observational data sets and models.
- Provide open access data of the ECoE measurements and applications and develop management protocols and procedures, towards attracting external users.
STO.03
Strengthen the position of ECoE and spreading excellence at the regional research and innovation ecosystem.
- Strengthen the long-term collaboration between the twinning partners, foster researchers and staff exchange, apply “learning by doing” in designing, planning and proposing of new research projects and collaborations within the disciplines held by ATARI, towards closing the current R&I gap within the EU.
- Develop new R&I approaches, boost creativity and increase the mobility/permeability of researchers within industry and academia.
- Create strong links between ECoE researchers and Europe’s major atmospheric and climate research monitoring and networking infrastructures (e.g., ACTRIS), in order to facilitate permanent collaboration, to enable participation in upcoming large EU networking initiatives/projects, and to significantly increase the visibility of ECoE as a competent partner in the European atmospheric scientific community.
- Develop and offer courses harmonized with the capacities of ECoE, deliver additional training activities, with specific aim to spread the lessons learnt at the national level and also promoting the new datasets and knowledge to the national R&I ecosystem.
