On July 29th, 2026, the ATARRI project and the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence hosted a highly technical and engaging webinar exploring cutting-edge advancements in atmospheric remote sensing. The session, titled “From ground-based to spaceborne lidar: Aerosol Remote Sensing in support of EarthCARE and beyond,” featured Dr. Athena A. Floutsi, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS), who provided participants with an in-depth look at the evolution of lidar-based observational techniques. Centered on characterizing optical and microphysical aerosol properties, her presentation highlighted how bridging ground-based measurements with spaceborne capabilities enhances global atmospheric monitoring. As a member of the EarthCARE Level 2 ATLID team, Dr. Floutsi detailed her work on aerosol typing schemes as well as the maintenance and evolution of essential data streams, including the ATLID layer (A-LAY) products and the synergistic ATLID-MSI aerosol and cloud (AM-COL) products. These advancements are pivotal in optimizing satellite observation algorithms, bolstering global climate research, and expanding the frontiers of spaceborne Earth observation.
